A

In many countries, schools have long summer holidays, with shorter holidays in between. However, a new report suggests shortening school holidays to stop children forgetting what they have learnt during the long summer break. Instead of three school terms, it says, there should be five eight-week terms. And there should be just four weeks off in the summer, with a two-week break between the other terms.

Sonia Montero has two children at primary school and works full-time. She supports the idea. “The kids,” she says, “have much longer holidays than me and I can’t afford to take several weeks off work, so I need someone to take care of them. But nobody wants the work in the summer months — they all have holidays of their own.”

Not surprisingly, some young people disagree. Student Jason Panos says, “It’s a stupid idea. I would hate staying at school in the summer. It’s unfair, too. The people who suggest this had long school holidays when they were young, but now they want to stop us enjoying the summer. The kids in Spain and America have much longer holidays than here, but they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt in a few

- 3 -

months.”

Nadia Salib agrees. “Sure,” she says, “the first week at school after the summer is never easy, but you soon get back into it. The real problem round here is that kids get bored after so many weeks out of school, and then some of them start causing trouble. But the answer is to give them something to do, not make everyone stay in school longer.”

21. Why is Sonia in support of shorter school holidays?

A. She doesn’t get any summer holidays in her job.

B. She is worried that her children will forget what they’ve learnt. C. She can’t afford to pay someone to look after her children.

D. She can’t get anyone to look after her children in summer.

22. What does Jason say about long summer holidays?

A. They have no influence on children’s education. B.They can help children

forget about school.

C. It doesn’t make any sense.

D. Schools in other

countries don’t have them.

23. What is the main idea of the text?

A. It has been decided that summer holidays should be shortened.

B. Students are angry that school holidays have been changed. C. Not everyone agrees to change school holidays.

D. Teenagers are worried that they will be busy during summer holidays.

B

There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his

flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled

- 4 -

(溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”

And all that the old bucket could say was. “I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best. I’m happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”

One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”

Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare〔光秃秃的〕earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

24. What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean?

A. Dirty

B. Dark

C. Worn-out

D. Plain-looking.

25. What was the old bucket ashamed of?

A. His past.

B. His aging.

C. His manner.

D.

His

leaking.

26. The new bucket made conversations with the old one mainly to _______.

A. laugh at the old one

B. take pity on the old one D. praise the gardener’s kindness

C. show off its beautiful looks

27. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?

A. Because it had its own function. B. Because it stayed in its best condition. C. Because it was taken as a treasure. D. Because it was used to keep a balance.

C

Two hundred years ago the English poet William Wordsworth wrote “I Wander’d

- 5 -

Lonely as a Cloud”, a poem that expresses a basic spirit of early English Romanticism.

What makes this poem an example of Romantic thinking? It isn’t just that Wordsworth chooses to write about a natural scene: it is the way he describes the scene as if it had human emotions. For him, nature is not merely a neutral(无感情色彩的) mixture of scenery, colors, plants, rocks, soil, water and air. It is a living force that feels joy and sadness, shares human pain and even tries to educate us human beings by showing us the beauty of life.

Wordsworth’s home, Dove Cottage, is now one of the most popular destinations in the Lake District. You can go on a tour of the garden which William planted with wild flowers and which survived in his backyard even after they disappeared from the area. “He always said that if he hadn’t been a poet, he would have been a wonderful landscape gardener,” says Allan King of the Wordsworth Trust.

The place near Ullswater, where Wordsworth saw the daffodils(水仙花), is at the southernmost end of the lake. The lake is wide and calm at this turning point. There’s a bay where the trees have had their soil eroded(侵蚀) by lake water so that their roots are shockingly exposed. You walk along from tree to tree, hardly daring to breathe, because you are walking in the footprints of William from two centuries ago. The first group of daffodils appear, but they aren’t tall yellow trumpets(小号状的花) proudly swinging in the gentle wind. They are tiny wild daffodils, most of them still green and unopened, in groups of six or seven. They’re grouped around individual trees rather than collecting together.

But as you look north, from beside a huge ancient oak, you realize this is what delighted Wordsworth: group after group of the things, spread out to left and right but coming together in your sight so that they form a beautiful, pale-yellow carpet. What you’re seeing at last is nature transformed by human sight and imagination. 28. What was Wordsworth’s attitude to nature?

A. Nature had a character of its own. people.

C. Man could influence nature.

D. Nature was human-like.

B. Nature could talk to

29. We can learn from the text that Dove Cottage ____________.

C. receives a lot of visitors every year

B. has a wide range of

D. is famous for an actor

30. In what way is the scene at the southernmost end of the lake different from Wordsworth’s description?

A. All the daffodils are green and small. fewer and samller.

C. There are no daffodils around trees. by the lake.

31. The writer implies that the poem describes ____________.

A. exactly what Wordsworth saw in detail B. the effect the daffodils had on Wordsworth C. what Wordsworth saw around an ancient oak D. groups of daffodils on the left and on the right

Newspapers have had a lot of discussion about whether college students should take part-time jobs. 40% of people agree that it is good for college students to take part-time jobs. Students can reduce their parents’ load by taking part-time jobs, at the same time they can get social experience from their jobs. Besides, in their opinion, it makes their life more colorful.

On the other hand, 60% of people have different opinions. They think that study is the most important thing for students, including college students. Students need more time to master what they have learned in class. But taking part-time jobs has a bad effect on their study. Meanwhile, people worry that spending too much time on part-time work may lead students to have a wrong view on money.
